Amasra is one of the Black Sea’s rare natural harbours and tourist towns. Amasra Sailing Club, founded to bring sailing into the town’s tourism and sporting life, continues its 2007 season activities — sailing courses and races. The Governor’s Cup Sailing Races, part of the Youth and Sports Provincial Directorate’s 2007 activity programme, were held on 11–12 August 2007 in Amasra’s Large Harbour.
The races in Amasra’s Large Harbour were attended by Bartın Governor İsa Küçük, Amasra District Governor Hasan Öztürk, Amasra Mayor Ali Yıldırım, Coastal Security Amasra Group Commander Major Cengiz Ünver, Youth and Sports Provincial Director Nejat Pehlivan, club members, athletes’ families and citizens. In the Optimist class races (ages 6–15) with 12 competitors, prizes were presented at a ceremony held at Amasra Sailing Club. First-place Okan Özkara received his award from Governor İsa Küçük, second-place Naz Timur from District Governor Hasan Öztürk, and third-place Atakan Gayret from Major Cengiz Ünver; all competitors were also given certificates of achievement. Speaking at the prize ceremony, Governor Küçük said: “I would like you to know that the Bartın Governorship is always your supporter in your sporting activities. I also thank you all for your sportsmanlike competition.”
Governor Küçük also promised Amasra Sailing Club a LASER-class boat for the following year’s races. Meanwhile, Hüseyin Ayhan Seymen — a native of Amasra and President of the Antalya Chamber of Shipping — promised two boats for the following year’s races.
