Underground Galleries

Old Town (Kaleiçi), Amasra

During daylight hours

The Hidden World beneath the City

Few visitors notice what lies beneath Amasra. Starting from Zindan district in the old town and continuing towards the harbour, a tunnel system remains far below the city’s surface.

These underground galleries are attributed to the Roman period. The best-preserved section, at the Tomaşkuyusu site, can be explored for approximately 80 metres from the main entrance within the castle.

Connection to Cappadocia

Some historical researchers suggest that these galleries were inspired by the underground cities of Cappadocia (Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı). The purpose was most likely similar: shelter during sieges, food storage, or covert movement.

However, because Amasra’s geography is far more humid than Cappadocia’s and the rock structure is quite different, the expansion and extension of the galleries here was limited.

Visitor Information

The galleries are accessible from Zindan district. Inside it is quite dim, and in some sections the ceiling is low; a small torch or phone light is useful. For visits with children, adult supervision is recommended.

Free admission. The galleries can be visited throughout the day as part of a route combined with Amasra Castle.
