How about spending an enjoyable holiday with your loved ones in Amasra — a charming coastal town on the Black Sea — and experiencing wonderful moments in Amasra’s hotels? In recent years Amasra has contributed greatly to Bartın’s transformation into a tourism hub, and raki-balık (fish with raki) tables have become the stuff of dreams. Let us take a closer look at what you can do in Amasra! Before getting into this guide about the places I visited in Amasra, I would like to give some detailed information about Amasra.

About Amasra

People sometimes react to the name Amasra by saying “Amasya?” — yet before you holiday in this small town whose origins stretch back 5,000 years, consider that it was once home to some of history’s most important civilisations: Roman, Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman. Today, although the population is small, the natural beauty and scenery attract crowds to Amasra. Due to the growing tourist demand for one of the Black Sea coast’s most special destinations, there has been a significant increase in Amasra’s accommodation options. Before choosing one of the Amasra hotels and guesthouses located in different parts of the town, I suggest you draw up a list of places you need to see. Choosing accommodation that is central and close to Amasra’s attractions will work to your advantage. So, what are the places to visit in Amasra?

Places to Visit in Amasra

In today’s charming coastal town — once home to many different civilisations — there are numerous works worth seeing. Built in different architectural styles, these cultural treasures have survived to the present day; do not leave Amasra without seeing them.

Amasra Castle

This castle allows you to look down over Amasra and feel the town at your feet, offering superb views. Placed on the UNESCO Tentative Heritage List, the castle is accepted as consisting of two parts, much like Istanbul’s Anatolian and Rumelian fortresses. Very close to Amasra’s hotels, this castle should not be missed when visiting Amasra. Amasra Castle was one of my favourite places during my visit — I strongly recommend it.

Kemere Bridge

This bridge, connecting the Boztepe peninsula just beside Amasra to the mainland, can be traced back to the Roman period. Although the bridge — built in a classical architectural style — has undergone various restorations over time, it has managed to retain its grandeur. Close to the Amasra hotel area, this bridge attracts streams of tourists. Kemere Bridge is a place where you can take extraordinary photographs. You, too, can add photos taken at Kemere Bridge to your album as I did. Beyond the bridge there is also a place called the Dark Gate (Karanlık Kapı).

Direkli Kaya

The Genoese, known as history’s most important maritime civilisation, once brought Amasra under their dominion. Direkli Kaya, remaining from that era, was used as a 7-metre observation and lighting tower. This tower, built on a rock right by the sea, is both a location where you can take photographs and where you can meet the cold Black Sea waters.

Amasra Hotels and Accommodation Options

Amasra, which has practically become Bartın’s most important source of income and is visited year-round by thousands of domestic and foreign tourists, is raising the standard of its hotel and guesthouse options every year. For those seeking luxury and comfort, there are excellent Amasra hotel options. Because Amasra, even if known as a small coastal town, welcomes visitors from various income groups who all want to enjoy their holiday to the full. If you wish not to overspend and to take a holiday on a tighter budget when coming to Amasra, you can choose from the guesthouse options. I, too, stayed in a guesthouse during my visit to Amasra and was very satisfied with the service. You can also research a guesthouse according to your budget. Even though they are called guesthouses, the accommodation options that will not let you down in terms of comfort and ease can be reviewed in detail before you come to Amasra. Because Amasra is a magnificent place not only to see but also to feel its naturalness! You, too, must absolutely taste this pleasure.
