The Genoese Inner Citadel
Inside Amasra Castle there is another castle: the Genoa Castle (Cenova Şatosu). During the 14th and 15th centuries, when the Genoese held Amasra, this inner fortress served as both their military headquarters and administrative centre. Over time a palace section was added, becoming the residence of the city governor (podestà).
The Coats of Arms above the Gate
What makes the structure most historically valuable is the Genoese family coats of arms carved above the entrance gate. These stone relief sculptures, which have survived intact through the centuries, represent the identities of the Genoese noble families who governed the city. They connect Amasra geographically and culturally to the Genoese-controlled fortresses of Crimea, Greece and the Levantine coast of the same period.
The Hill Overlooking the Large Harbour
The castle is approached from the Large Harbour side. Positioned at one of the highest points of the peninsula, it offers an unobstructed view of the entire Large Harbour bay and the coastline stretching towards Bartın. This vantage point also makes the defensive strategy plain: for centuries the sea was watched from here for any approaching threat.
